How you control your indoor air comfort greatly may greatly affect your health. For those with allergies to pets, dust, and mold to those who suffer from tree pollen in the spring and ragweed in the fall, indoor air control is a must. This year pollen counts have been at insanely high levels, and if you're allergic then having a Central Air Conditioner with all those windows closed can save you a lot of headache, and grant you a lot of sleep! Follow these tips to keep you sneeze-free this spring.
Seal the house
During the spring season temperatures in Cincinnati average around 65-70 degrees during the day, and can cool down (even freeze sometimes!) in the night. Because of the spring-breeze and great outdoor temperatures, many people just leave their windows and doors open. While this can be great at saving you money and bringing the scent of spring-flowers indoors, this can also set you up for pure suffering. Allergies can cause sneezing fits, interrupt your sleep, give you asthma and even send you into the ER should you not have the proper medication. Staying away from the allergens is your best bet, so keep the windows & doors shut at all times! Making sure your house is properly insulated may help too(and also save you money on energy!)
Run your Air Conditioner and/or Dehumidifier
With the house sealed, your home alone can get quite stuffy. Running a dehumidifier or air conditioner will take the moisture out of your home. Low moisture levels are also good for those who suffer from indoor allergies such as mold. If you're concerned about using too much energy, please take a look at this article about how to save hundreds of dollars on energy-costs.
Maintain your Filtration System
Set the thermostat to the ON position, and let the fan run even when the A/C is off. This can keep air circulating through your home, and trapping nasty allergens like pollen into the filter. Never neglect your filters, always change them on a regular basis! For those who have 1 inch filters, replace them every time you pay your energy bill. For those who want cleaner than average air, consider using a Media Air Cleaner or HEPA filter system. However, keeping the air circulating through your home and trapping particles in the standard filters can make a big difference alone. Right now we are installing FREE Media Air Cleaners when choosing us to install a new HVAC system, so feel free to contact us for details! (Offer expires 8/1/2010)
Use and maintain your UV Air Purification System
The National Academy of Science Institute of Medicine reported that exposure to indoor pollutants is a key contributor to the asthma problems of this nation, and that most allergy and asthma sources are passed from person to person through the air. UV radiation destroys viruses, bacteria, fungus, molds, and other irritants. However, these bulbs must be replaced on an annual basis, even if they are still glowing in your duct work. Actual UV rays are invisible, so make sure you replace your UV Bulb every year if you have one. If you're interested in a new UV Air Purifier, contact us today.
